Use the Discharge/Checkin wizard to first discharge the item from the user, and then use the Mark Item Lost wizard to mark the item as LOST. The following procedure shows what happens when you are using the Mark Item Lost wizard and discover that the item is charged to a user.
1. Select the Mark Item Lost wizard.
2. Identify the item in the Item Lookup step.
If the Current field displays, the item whose record was most recently displayed or modified is retained. Select the Current field to select this item.
3. If a list of items displays, select an item and select the Mark Item Lost button.
4. If the selected item has more than one copy, select the desired copy from the Vols/Copies folder, and select the Select Lost Copy button. If the wrong item was identified, select the Lookup Another Item button.
If the item is currently checked out, the following message also displays with a Recirculate Override message.
Item charged and may not be recirculated
5. Select the Discharge/Checkin wizard and discharge the item from the user.
Note: If the user is billable, you will need to review the replacement cost bill and processing fee bill, and accept payments or modify the bills as needed.
6. Select the Mark Item Lost wizard again. The item ID should be retained in the Current field.
Information about the charged item(s) displays.
7. Select OK. The item is charged to LOST, with a due date of NEVER, and will be added to the list of lost items.

If a user thinks that the item may be found in the future, you may wish to leave the item charged to the user and to mark the item as LOST to stop overdue fines from accruing.
1. Select the Mark Item Lost wizard.

7. Select the Pay Later button to mark the item as LOST, or select the Pay Now button to display the Payment Type field. If the bill is being paid now, enter a payment type and select OK to mark the item as LOST and to pay the bill in full. To cancel bills, select the Cancel Lost Item Bill button.

To disable automatic billing for lost items, disable the Automatically Bill for Lost Item property in the Mark Item Lost wizard.
1. To select the Mark Item Lost properties, place the cursor on the Mark Item Lost wizard and click the right mouse button.
2. Select Properties from the popup menu. The Mark Item Lost: Set Properties window displays.
3. Select the Behavior folder and disable the Automatically Bill for Lost Item checkbox.
4. Select OK to save the wizard properties change.
